Background

On September 11th, 1906 Mahatma Gandhi gave the world a new weapon of nonviolence — Satyagraha.

Since September 11th, 2001, as violence and counter-violence have reached new heights of legitimacy, the birth of Satyagraha has demanded special attention and understanding.

Over the last three years Swaraj Peeth has been engaged in exploring the appeal of Mahatma Gandhi’s message, as captured on September 11th, 1906 and in his root text Hind Swaraj. Hind Swaraj is a dialogue both on extremism and on the transformation of governance in consonance with the true meaning of civilization.

As we all believe in positive action, we invite you to join us in support of a group of common men and women engaged in finding answers to the violence around them. Individuals involved in dialogue on Hind Swaraj and building a Shanti Sena for social harmony will assemble from a dozen towns and villages of Western UP. A group from among them will take the pledge to become Shanti Sainiks.
